It is not clear whether John (Dr. Jack) Brereton was Mary Helen's brotheror her cousin. It is possible that he was actually the son of herbrother William, who was 18 years older than she was (born about 1857),and simply seemed closer to her own generation. He maintained a medicalpractice in Altadena near Eliot Jr. High School.
