I have summarised the 2 queries I have, with the relevent data -
I stripped out a lot of stuff to make it clearer. I have a lot of
Fairmaner data from this time, but haven't put it together to my
satisfaction yet. A particular problem is the number of Williams.
Hopefully, these Brereton connections may help to clear things up
1. How does this Thomas Brereton relate to William Fairmaner?
From the will of William Fairmaner East Marden/Upmarden in 1649,
son of Edmund and Mildred.
He leaves his son in law, Thomas Brereton, £50.
(William was married to a Katherine, surname unknown and no children
known, she remarried and became Katherine Scott)
From “Pedigree of Breretons of Chilgrove and Greenlands,
West Dean”
Thomas Brereton of Greenlands,West Dean, also of Stoughton,Emsworth
and Cuckfield;Living W Dean at time of death. Lord of the manor
of Stanford Dingley,Berks
Thomas married Katherine Pitt, sister of John Pitt of Shopwick manor,
and E Marden, Sussex.
Cousin of Mary Goddard and Dorothy Walwyn
William Pitt of Clare Market,Westminster mentioned in will, proved
by William Pitt of St Clements Dane.
(The will of Thomas’ sister Mary, in 1701, mentions her Uncle,
John Pitts and her cousins Mary Goddard and Dorothy Walwyn –
has the pedigree assumed that his wife is Katherine Pitt from the
uncle’s name?)
IGI:CATHARINE PITT Christening:30 JAN 1630 Treyford With Didling
Father:JOHN PITT
I also came across this entry in the Idsworth Manorial book, in
1686:
“Thomas Jenman (now Thomas Brereton)”
And
I have a William Fairmaner, possibly the uncle of the above William,
who married Margaret Symes, previously married to a Jenman and who
had a son, Thomas Jenman born c1650.
He is named as Thomas Jenman in her will of 1697, in which she left
land called “Biggest Holt Croft” lying by the side of
East Harting Downs to her granddaughter Katherine.
In 1714 John Scott of Elsted leased land called Holt Close, near
the top of East Harting Doune, by land sometime Jenmans and purchased
from Thomas Brereton of Stoughton.
2. How does Mary Silvester relate to the Fairmaners?

Thinking again about the Thomas mentioned in the will of 1649 and
only knowing of one Thomas in the area at that time , ie the father
of Richard, I realised I hadn't checked the burial records for Breretons.
Here is the list from the NBI for Sussex, there is nothing in Hampshire,
where they could have strayed to.
And there is a another Thomas, died 1667 - who is he?
16 Apr 1558 Christover BRERETON Hailsham, St Mary
17 Jan 1667 Thomas BRERETON East Marden, St Peter ?
7 Feb 1693 Thomas BRERETON East Marden, St Peter b.1690
15 Jan 1695 Richard BRERETON East Marden, St Peter b.1691

3 Nov 1701 Mary BRERETON East Marden, St Peter d of Thos&Katherine

That Thomas is in the IGI, baptised 1666, so not the one from 1649,
unless they didn't baptise him at birth and waited until he was
dying and that seems unlikely.
THOS. BRERETON Chr:20 DEC 1666 East Marden Father:THO. BRERETON
Mother:KATHERINE
Dth:17 JAN 1666
The East Marden records seem to be missing between 1640 and 1665,
I'll see if there is anything else if I go back to Chichester -
I might be going that way on Friday.
The Thomas, that married Katherine, was born 1612 so he was quite
old when he had Thomas - I wonder if there was an earlier marriage?
