Subject: John Brereton

Hi Bruce,

I have a 1930s Era book on Martha's Vineyard mentioning John Brereton as the cartographer on Bartholomew Gosnold's 1602 exploratory voyage, and shows the map he created of the Island. The voyage was financed by John Martin, son of Richard Martin, Master of the Mint.

Another Vineyard history shows several decades when it was actually called Martin's Vineyard. Martha is still a mystery...

My interest has been twofold:

1. The origin of my direct ancestor, George Martin, b. 1660+/-. Was he a descendant of John?  He is described as a "gentleman."

George married Abigail Lord of Salem, was present in Newport in 1691. In 1713, their son Thomas settled on "his father's land in Martha's Vineyard" and married Amy Daggett, who's grandmother was Alice Sissetom. The Daggett-Sissetom marriage is the first recorded intermarriage of an English settler and a native American in Mass. colony.

2. Amy Daggett Martin's grandfather was the son of John Daggett and Hephzibah Brotherton, English settlers who arrived in mid 1620s, settling in Duxbury and Marshfield. Hepzibah's sister Hester appears to have settled later in the Virginia colony. Cannot find any ancestors of these Brothertons, but the name Brotherton was carried on in Every Subsequent Generation up to and including my grandfather, as his middle name.

I've wondered if the Brotherton name was a variation of original French rooted Brereton. Also if my Brothertons, and possibly even your Brereton, have any connection to Thomas de Brotherton, son of King Edward I and Queen Marguerite, born in 1300 in the Yorkshire village of Brotherton "as his mother was riding through on a hunt! "

Any input welcome!

Happy New Year,
Abby Martin
